Public career

Kwankwaso became deputy speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives during the Third Assembly in 1992. He later served two non-consecutive terms as Governor of Kano State, first from 1999 to 2003 and again from 2011 to 2015. Between those terms, he served as Nigeria's minister of defence from 2003 to 2007, and he subsequently represented Kano Central in the Senate.
